Day 113: Nemesis
Do you remember the old Batman TV show from the 60s? I remember as a child watching it and emulating every POW, WHAM, BOP and YONK. That is until my mother actually took notice of it one day and then forever banned me from watching it again. That original show may have been the first show geared at children that took advantage of the "cliff-hanger". It seemed like at least every other show, Batman or the boy wonder would be in some dire situation that seemed impossible to escape. The announcer would end the show with ominous questions like, "Will the caped crusader be the punch line?" or "Will Gotham get the joke?" "Tune in next week at the same Bat-time and same Bat-channel." And boy did it work. Even after my mom banned me, I was lucky that my aunt knew of no such prohibition and let me watch it at her Bat-house.
The nemesis is what makes many a story have flavor and it's what keeps us glued to our seats in the movie theatre. And if the actors and setting and attention to detail is great enough to suspend our disbelief, we will actually have those feelings of anxiety that come from wondering if the hero will be defeated this time. But just when we are about to lose control our rational self whispers in our ear, "it's just a movie", and we calm down and our confidence starts to build as we will the protagonist to inevitable victory.
That's the confidence I wish for all of us...out here...in this life...in this world.
